New Gold Coast dive attraction

11 Aug 2021

Queensland’s next underwater attraction, Wonder Reef is set to be lowered to the ocean floor off the Gold Coast as work on the installation wraps-up.

The $5 million jointly funded project between the Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast is expected to attract 160,000 visitors every year, supporting local jobs and generating more than $30m for the Gold Coast’s visitor economy.

Funded through the Growing Tourism Infrastructure initiative, Wonder Reef is set to become a must-see attraction for divers and ocean enthusiasts around Australia.

Once complete the nine buoyant sculptural reef structures that make-up Wonder Reef will be towed 2.5 kilometres offshore from The Spit, Main Beach.

Wonder Reef joins other Gold Coast dive attractions including the Scottish Prince of nearby reefs and other artificial reef dive sites and underwater art supported by the Queensland Government including:

  • Townsville’s Museum of Underwater Art
  • Ex-HMAS Tobruk in the Great Sandy Marine Park, and
  • Ex-HMAS Brisbane off Mooloolaba

Wonder Reef is set to open in early 2022.
