Mackay scores big with major basketball championships

05 Mar 2021

The nation’s best junior basketballers will bounce into Mackay for the next two years, with the city set to host the Under 20 Australian Junior Basketball Championships and Ivor Burge Championships for open-age players with an intellectual disability.

Hundreds of young men and women will hit the courts, playing for 20 teams across 85 games at the Mackay Multi-Sport Stadium from 3-7 May this year.

The events will inject $2.7 million into the local economy and generate up to 19,000 visitor nights.

The Championships are also an important pathway for elite players, officials and coaches, while giving spectators a chance to see the future stars of the sport in action.

The Championships are being staged as part of a two-year partnership between Tourism and Events Queensland, Basketball Australia and Mackay Regional Council.
