Next steps for Wangetti Trail

09 Sep 2021

The public can now have their say on preliminary documentation for the Wangetti South section of the proposed $41.4 million Wangetti Trail development in Tropical North Queensland.

Interested parties have been invited to have their say from Monday 30 August 2021 to 5pm (AEST) 10 September 2021.

The Australian Government has requested further information for the assessment of the proposed southern trail under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, or EPBC Act.

The Australian Government is seeking further information including, but not limited to, the management and mitigation of potential animal and World Heritage impacts, offsets, rehabilitation and administrative matters.

The EPBC Act allows for a period of public comment on the material through the Tourism Department’s website at: www.qld.gov.au/wangettitrail

Subject to approvals, construction is due to commence on Wangetti South (Palm Cove to Wangetti) by late 2021 creating employment and traineeships for locals and Traditional Owners including cultural monitoring onsite to protect items of cultural significance found during construction, and further benefits once operational.

The Wangetti Trail project has received $33.4 million in Queensland Government support, with the Australian Government investing $8 million from the National Tourism Icons Program.
