$3 million for better Great Barrier Reef island access

26 Aug 2022

The Queensland Government will invest $3 million to create the new Great Barrier Reef Island Marine Infrastructure Package to partner with industry to improve access to our iconic Great Barrier Reef Islands.

The Marine Infrastructure Package will provide funding in partnership with industry to build access infrastructure that will improve public access to islands with resorts, activate tourism and encourage visitors to explore Queensland’s island-based national parks or other protected areas.

This funding is intended to help bring investment in new and upgraded resort or ecotourism accommodation and experiences on islands.

The Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport will continue engaging with key stakeholders to identify the best opportunities to utilise this important funding.

This funding builds on the State Government’s previous work to reactivate Great Barrier Reef island resorts through a range of policy and program initiatives including the $25 million Great Barrier Reef Island Resorts Rejuvenation Program.
