Football venues get $2.6 million makeover ahead of FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023

Suburban football grounds will get a $2.6 million World Cup makeover ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 with the Matildas and three other countries to call Queensland home for the tournament.

The Matildas will set up their Team Base Camp at Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC), Brazil will be based at Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex, Nigeria at Richlands Lions FC Stadium and Republic of Ireland at Goodwin Park, Yeronga.

Work already underway includes up to $1 million for new change rooms at Richlands Lions, $695,000 for pitch works and new change rooms at Goodwin Park and $248,008 for lighting upgrades at Moreton Bay Sports Complex.

There are also $150,000 pitch upgrades and site facility works happening at both Perry Park and Spencer Park which will serve as World Cup training grounds for teams playing in Brisbane and up to $390,996 is going towards lighting upgrades at Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club.

A further $295,425 has been approved under the joint Federal-State Community and Recreational Assets Recovery and Resilience Program to make flood repairs and replace equipment at Spencer Park, Newmarket.

The investments will ensure there are lasting legacy benefits from the tournament which is being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from 20 July to 20 August 2023.

New Wintergreen Couch turf is being laid and drainage improved at QSAC in preparation for the arrival of the Matildas, who will be the big drawcard for home fans as they chase World Cup glory.

Brisbane will host eight matches including Australia v Nigeria, France v Brazil and Korea Republic v Germany, a Round-of-16 knock-out match, a Quarter-Final, the Third Place Play-off and other visiting teams including England and the Republic of Ireland.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is the largest women’s sporting event in the world and will feature 32 teams for the first time in the event’s history, with all teams setting up a dedicated Team Base Camp for the first time in the event’s history.

The tournament will support 107 good jobs while generating $30.5 million for the Queensland visitor economy.
