It’s a slam dunk for the Aurukun community!

18 Feb 2022

Funded by the Queensland Government and the Aurukun Shire Council, the Aurukun community are thoroughly enjoying their brand new multipurpose outdoor courts, with participation numbers in physical activity already steadily increasing.

The existing courts were resurfaced with new fencing and lighting installed PLUS an electrical upgrade to have the courts operational all day and into the evening.

The lights are auto timed for two-hour intervals every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 6.30pm – 8.30pm. These timeframes promote sun safety and provides immediate relief from the high ambient temperatures experienced in Cape York communities.

The project value adds to the significant revitalisation of the sports precinct that includes the sports hall, splash park, community centre and rugby league field.

The design and creation of the basketball backboards were painted by local artists representing the five clans at the Wik and Kugu Arts Centre. These murals represent the local animals found in and around Aurukun and enhances community pride and joy.

Local council has also been successful in funding for purchasing equipment to establish and support start up kits for basketball and tennis activities.

It's fabulous to see this wonderful asset being embraced by the local community and complements the other nearby community sport and recreation facilities.

Well done to everyone involved in getting this project delivered.
