Generation 2032 Elite coach scholars and gym herald new era for QAS

14 Feb 2022

A new era has begun for Queensland’s elite athletes, with the first wave of Generation 2032 Elite Coach scholars taking up leadership positions within their sports, as a new $9.8 million state-of-the-art gym, health suites and science lab officially opens at the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS).

The QAS, the Queensland Government’s High-Performance Agency and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) have partnered with National and State Sporting Organisations to develop an innovative 2032 Elite Coach Scholarship Program.

The program looks to systematically identify and accelerate the development of 11 aspiring Brisbane 2032 coaches, undertaking a rigorous development program that will equip them to coach successfully in elite sporting environments.

The 11 coaches will be personally mentored by top Queensland and international coaches with a track record of delivering medal-winning performances like those seen in Tokyo.

The coaches have been chosen from a wide variety of summer, winter, Olympic and Paralympic sports, with nine female coaches out of the 11 to develop through this new program.

The new QAS gym has double the footprint of the previous one while the new Science Lab has state-of-the-art technology including a 48-metre mondo running track with force plates to measure runners, health suites for ultrasounds, a heat and altitude chamber, ergo, bikes and treadmills accessible for our Paralympic wheelchair users.

The newly refurbished health suites, which feature physiotherapy, medical, analysis and nutritional services all in one place will provide a one-stop-shop for ensuring our athletes are best prepared.

More than 400 tradespeople helped Buildcorp construct the gym, health suites and science lab.
