World’s first buoyant reef to open on the Gold Coast

03 Jun 2022

Diving enthusiasts around the world will have more reason to come dive down under with the opening of the new Wonder Reef on the Gold Coast.

The world’s first buoyant reef, made of nine sculptural reef flutes reaching 22 metres above the sea floor is situated 2.5 kilometres off The Spit, Main Beach.

Through a partnership with the City of Gold Coast, the Queensland Government invested $2.5 million in matched funding through the Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund, as well as provided Council a 50-year lease over the site.

Designed by reef experts, Subcon Blue Solutions and renowned Queensland artist Daniel Templeman, the reef flutes are submerged approximately 7 metres below the surface, providing a unique offering to all levels of divers.

Wonder Reef was installed in August 2021 to undergo monitoring and testing for conditions of approval and diver safety, also allowing time to attract a rich diversity of marine life before opening to the public in June 2022.

The dive site is expected to attract 16,000 visitors annually and forecast to inject $32 million into the Gold Coast tourism industry within its first 10 years of operation.

See the Wonder Reef website for further information on booking tours or accessing the public mooring.
