Griffiths Park has bright future with new lights

14 Mar 2022

The future of cricket and AFL in Cairns is a little brighter after new lights were switched on as part of a $5.1 million upgrade of Griffiths Park at Manunda.

Four new 41-metre-high light towers with 500 lux capacity have been installed, as well as new pathways, activity spaces, parking, cricket practice wickets and white picket fences.

The improvements mean Griffiths Park can host high-level representative cricket and AFL competitions and major sporting events while opening the Manunda Sporting Precinct up to more community groups, entertainment or markets.

The works were jointly funded by the Queensland Government’s Active Community Infrastructure program ($1 million), Cairns Regional Council ($4 million) and Queensland Cricket ($100,000).

The venue also received new change rooms three years ago, funded under the Female Facilities program.
