New synthetic sports field for Ipswich State High School

22 Mar 2022

Thanks to $1.35 million in Queensland Government funding, Ipswich’s football stars will be able to access an all-weather synthetic pitch at Ipswich State High School.

Of the $1.35 million, DTIS provided $650,000 with the Department of Education chipping in $700,000.

The astroturf ground is a full-sized field for up to 22 players, which can be split up to accommodate multiple games.

It also incorporates an athletics track to allow running practice.

The pitch is particularly perfect for futsal, which requires a uniform surface.

The new facility will help boost Ipswich State High School’s developing football program.

The school offers a High-Performance Program in several sports, including football and rugby league and is developing both their basketball and netball programs.

About 160 students do football classes.

Use of the synthetic field is predominantly for football, but there are general classes that do generic ball skills which also use the synthetic field.

The school’s rugby league teams also do some training on the field.

The school had been using the pitches of the nearby Ipswich Bulls Football Club.

The new pitch means the school can now play competition matches on home ground.

As part of the Active Community Infrastructure program, funding for the new pitch sets out that schools must share their new infrastructure with the community.

The facilities become an important community resource, encouraging residents to take up sport, with all the physical and mental health benefits that come with it.

Local football clubs in the Ipswich are already showing a keen interest in the upgraded ground.

The school plans to hire out the ground for club uses in the evenings and during weekends and holidays for both training and play.
According to 2019 Sport Australia AusPlay survey, football is Australia’s largest team sport.

About 1.8 million Australians play club football, of which 692,000 are children.
