North Queensland sport will elevate to a whole new level with the official opening of three new world-class indoor multi-purpose courts and gym at the Townsville Sports Precinct.

The new $14 million indoor venue and upgrades will be transformational for the Townsville Sports Precinct which already boasts an international standard athletics track, playing fields, canteens and conference facilities.

The three multi-purpose courts have sprung timber floors, shot clocks, scoreboards and eight-metre-high ceilings, and the massive combination indoor/outdoor gym includes a wide variety of cardio and resistance equipment.

The courts and gym can be used by groups playing basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, badminton or wheelchair sports, while also being a drawcard for fitness classes and a variety of sporting and non-sporting events.

The additional indoor court space has been welcomed by local disability sporting organisations, with Wheelchair Rugby League Australia and Sporting Wheelies Townsville running sessions at the Centre, which is fully accessible and inclusive.

The new-look Precinct is surrounded by new public amenities, meet-and-greet spaces and a reception area, with plenty of open green spaces for events.

The works were carried out as part of a $40 million refurbishment of the Townsville Sports Precinct, Gold Coast Recreation Centre and Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre to create active community hubs for Queenslanders.
