Gold Coast lands Australian Gymnastics Championships for two more years

04 Nov 2022

One of the major legacy venues of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games has been awarded hosting rights for the Australian Gymnastics Championships for another two years.

The Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre will host the Championships through until at least 2024, making it four years in a row and cementing the venue as a premium facility having staged 584 events since it opened in April 2017, just prior to the Commonwealth Games.

The latest vote of confidence shows what is possible in developing venues that have lasting community benefits as planning continues for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

World-class sporting venues not only become a tourism and events drawcard, they also provide more opportunities for young people to play sport and to compete at the highest levels, while providing Queensland athletes with a home advantage.

Over the next two years the Australian Gymnastics Championships are projected to attract 15,000 visitors to the Gold Coast, including 9,000 from out of state, contributing 64,000 visitor nights to the region and supporting $11.14 million in direct and indirect expenditure.

The event is held over a two-week period in May and includes National title events in Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline, Acrobatic and Fast-paced Aerobic Gymnastics.

The event is supported by the Queensland Government as part of Tourism and Event Queensland’s It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar which is expected to generate more than $500 million in economic benefit this year, in partnership with Major Events Gold Coast.

The recently completed National Clubs Gymnastics Carnival has also been locked in at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre until 2024.
