Sporting facilities get $75 million in disaster funding

18 Nov 2022

More than 200 sites across Queensland will benefit from $75 million in joint state and federal funding in response to major flooding and rain events since late 2021.

The council sites and sporting clubs will be repaired, re-built and strengthened through the Community and Recreational Assets Recovery and Resilience Program and the Sport and Recreation Recovery Grant Program.

Both programs are funded under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Repairs will be made to clubhouses, change rooms, playing fields and other important community assets that are fundamental to volunteers delivering sport and active recreation opportunities to their communities.

The funds will help sporting clubs to re-establish operations and better cope under future severe weather events while creating jobs for local contractors whose work will directly support their communities.

Expressions of Interest opened on 13 June 2022 and closed on 8 July, with all funded projects to be completed by 30 June 2024.

Sport and recreation officers undertook more than 150 site visits across 20 Local Government Areas to meet with those affected, while working with 175 organisations including 166 clubs and nine Local Governments.

Some of the projects funded include more than $2 million for flood repairs at Gold Crest Cricket Club in partnership with Commercial Hockey Club, $2.9 million for repairs at Mitchelton Sports Club, $2.77 million for Tansey Polocrosse Complex at Gympie and $1.44 million for Hawks AFL Club at Taigum.

Other worthy recipients include $1.67 million to rebuild netball surfaces at Chermside and $1.46 million for netball facilities at Tewantin, $1.34 million to rebuild basketball courts at Toowong, $2.2 million for Wynnum Wolves Football Club and $1.46 million for repairs at Carbrook Golf Club.
