The world’s best confirmed for Brisbane at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2022

Leading women’s footballing nations including Germany, England, France and Brazil, alongside our very own Matildas, will compete in Brisbane next year when the largest women’s sporting event in the world kicks off in July 2023.

Following the official FIFA Women’s World Cup (FWWC) 2023 Draw on Saturday 22nd October in Auckland, Brisbane is confirmed to host at least nine countries – Australia, England, Nigeria, France, Brazil, Republic of Ireland, Korea Republic, Germany and the Group B Play-off Winner (either Chile, Senegal or Haiti).

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the month-long tournament would generate $30.5 million for the Queensland economy.

“The FFWC 2023 will feature 32 teams for the first time in the event’s history, on par with the FIFA Men’s World Cup, and will attract more than one billion television viewers,” he said.

“Brisbane will host eight matches, including the Matildas second Group match against Nigeria (ranked 45th in the world) on 27 July, a Round-of-16 knock-out match, a Quarter-Final, and the Third Place Play-off.

“The tournament Draw provides Queenslanders with some high-profile Group stage match ups in our own backyard such as France (ranked 5th) v Brazil (ranked 9th) and Korea Republic (ranked 17th) v Germany (ranked 3rd).

“The Group stage matches in Brisbane involve four teams ranked in the top-10 on the FIFA Women’s World Ranking, with four matches featuring a team seeded first in their Group.”

FWWC’s Chief Operation Officer (Australia), Jane Fernandez said, “The FWWC Draw is a monumental milestone on the road to the tournament in 2023. We now know where each of the 32 teams will begin their journey and importantly who is coming to Brisbane.

“We are excited to see each and every one of these teams in action next year and I look forward to seeing the fans get behind the teams at every venue including Brisbane Stadium, which we now know will play host to Germany, England, France and Brazil.

Tickets for the tournament are now on sale and we look forward to witnessing history next year for a tournament that will go Beyond Greatness.”

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said hosting these matches will be another opportunity to showcase our spectacular city, Brisbane.

“Brisbane has become one of Australia’s leading destinations for sporting events and hosting these matches will be another chance to show why our incredible city was selected to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Cr Schrinner said.

“With the draw now finalised, we’re expecting thousands of fans to secure their seats in Brisbane to watch their favourite teams and players.”

Football Queensland Chief Executive Officer Robert Cavallucci said the tournament presented a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation of young Queenslanders by creating a lasting legacy for the women’s game.

“We’re now less than nine months away from welcoming the biggest global women’s sporting event to our state as some of the world’s best footballers descend on Queensland, with Brisbane confirmed to host at least nine countries for the FWWC 2023™,” Mr Cavallucci said.

“Queensland has an enviable track record of producing outstanding female talent who’ve made it into the Matildas, and the FWWC 2023™ will amplify record female participation numbers and the staggering year-on-year growth of the world game in Queensland.”

Minister Hinchliffe said the tournament would showcase Queensland’s major event capabilities ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“And hosting FWWC 2023 matches presents a significant opportunity to drive participation in sport by women and girls,” he said.
