Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement 2023

27 Mar 2023

The Australian Institute of Sport recently released the Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement 2023 (CBHPS 2023) which replaces the Concussion in Sport Australia Position Statement 2019.

The CBHPS 2023 brings together the most contemporary, evidence-based information on concussion, repeated head trauma and brain health and presents it in a format appropriate for all stakeholders, including sport administrators, medical practitioners, coaches, parents and athletes, who are seeking reliable information to ensure participant safety and welfare is paramount, although it is not considered a guideline for clinical practice or legal standard of care.

The updated statement provides an overview of the most up to date scientific literature on potential long-term effects of repeated head trauma and concussion in athletes as well as recommendations and evidence specifically relating to concussion and brain health in female athlete and para athlete cohorts. Like its 2019 predecessor, the CBHPS 2023 is based on the principle of an abundance of caution “if in doubt, sit them out.”

The new CBHPS 2023 will be an important tool to support the revision of activity-specific sport and active recreation concussion guidelines that have been based on the previous Concussion in Sport Australia Position Statement 2019.

The Australian Institute of Sport has committed to updating the CBHPS 2023 as new knowledge develops including after the latest evidence presented by the Concussion in Sport Group at the 2022 Amsterdam Consensus Conference is released, likely later in 2023.
