Sunshine Butterflies spread their wings in the great outdoors
New Commando Outdoor Education program for people living with a disability.
Sunshine Butterflies are a disability support service on a mission to reduce the stigma of disability and improve the lives of those living with disability and their families.
They provide a broad range of daily recreational, educational and life skills programs for individuals of all ages and abilities.
Sport and Recreation have been strong supporters of the Butterflies’ great work and recently provided funds through the Active Clubs Kickstart program for the new Commando Outdoor Education program.
Sunshine Butterflies Community Development Officer, Lucy Mills said the funds through the Active Clubs Kickstart program have really helped take the Commando Outdoor Education program to the next level.
“Our members have learned so many new skills and gained so much confidence and independence in the outdoors.”
This great new program enables people of all abilities to enjoy the great outdoors with confidence.
The program incorporates a diverse range of outdoor activities including bushwalking, orienteering, kayaking, fishing and camping, with weekly challenges to earn achievement badges.
Participants will learn new skills as well as gain independence and confidence in the great outdoors.
Damien Davey, member of the Sunshine Butterflies Commando Outdoor Education program said the program has been really fun.
"I have learned lots of new skills including how to set up a safe campsite for my friends and I've experienced lots of new outdoor activities like archery, rock climbing and bush trekking.”
