Celebrating our sport and rec volunteers

13 Jul 2022

National Volunteering Week 2021 is an opportune time to acknowledge the thousands of sport and rec volunteers across the state for their unwavering commitment.

There is no doubt that volunteers are the lifeblood of Queensland’s sport and recreation clubs and organisations. Often their tireless efforts go unrewarded, so we wanted to take a moment to give a few local legends a shout out.

Toowoomba Hockey Hero, Mick Smith, has dedicated more than three decades to his beloved sport of hockey. Mick’s passion and vision helped to get water-based surfaces installed across the region, shaping Toowoomba into a world-class hockey hotspot. Mick is a true champ – well done Mick!

Brian Hagaman is a volunteer at the Samford Valley Target Archers where he has been involved in archery for more than 23 years. Brian has played a major role in the advancement of his sport both locally and internationally. Thanks for your unwavering commitment, Brian!

Boxing coach and all-round superstar, Luke Sheehan, volunteers at the Spiders Boxing Club in Caboolture. Luke goes above and beyond to support his fighters and cares deeply about their well-being and health. Luke, your whole community admires and thanks you for your incredible effort.

Ian McGowan recently joined the Darling Downs Rugby Referees Association as Committee Secretary and is also a referee coach and mentor. Ian is proud to say that he has regained his sense of achievement and purpose through volunteering.  You're a legend, Ian!

Susan Wilson-Gahan is the President of Handball Queensland and says that volunteers provide the opportunity for people to be actively engaged in their communities and to participate in the activities they love or activities they would like to try. We could not agree more – Thanks Susan.
