Deadly Futsal program kicking goals in Kowanyama

Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council were approved a total of $468,537 in funding under the Deadly Active Sport and Recreation Program, with some funds used to kick off a weekly futsal competition.

The program has successfully engaged local community members to participate in a 9 week program. Open to 16 year olds to seniors, the program currently has 8 teams with interest growing in the community.

The council is so impressed with the program’s success it intend to run a new season in May and include juniors.

Ani Seruvatu, Acting Executive Manager Community Services and Cultural Heritage at Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council said the Monday night rivalry of futsal has made a major impact on the township of Kowanyama.

“The proactive engagement of all cohorts within the township of Kowanyama is amazing to see.

“We have seen firsthand the positive engagements and the smiles from all community members. It’s a subtle way to keep youth and children off the streets of Kowanyama and engaged with active sport.

“It is a game that has brought community members of all ages together in Kowanyama. As they say, One Unit One Movement, a community that plays together stays together” Ani said.

The Deadly Active Sport and Recreation Program (DASRP) is working with 17 identified discrete local councils to coordinate and facilitate the delivery of physical activity opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
