Our Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct making memories for people of all abilities

28 Nov 2022

We’re putting the spotlight on our Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct team who work to give every visitor a memorable experience.

It’s Disability Action Week 2022 (26 November - 2 December 2022)! Each year this week brings focus to and recognises the contributions people with disability make to our lives, families, workplaces, communities and to Queensland’s economy.

But delivering amazing, unique experiences to our guests with a disability is something we do all-year-round. The team are part of a workforce with specialised skills enabling them to facilitate adapted indoor and outdoor recreation activities at our Precincts and Venues.

The Precincts and Venues are continually improving and working to create an inclusive environment offering a range of accessible activities, accommodation and facilities.

The program officers discuss levels of ability with teachers or support staff so that activities can be tailored to suit the individual needs of clients, prior to them arriving. It's all about giving every guest an enjoyable, fun experience, and watching them do things they've never done before.

Whether it's using beach wheelchairs for access to water activities, adapted chairs and pulley systems for our Giant Swing, or changing the path of holds on our climbing walls, our Precincts and Venues team work to make guests with all abilities feel included.

The best part is seeing the raw emotion from kids on camp, the absolute joy on their faces and having some of them return each year and try something new, swing that bit further or climb that little bit higher than the year before.

And when their stay is over, staff feel rewarded waving goodbye having seen a completely different side to the guests that arrived on day one. Everyone leaves happy, confident and with an awesome story to tell about their adventure.
