The future looks ‘roar-some’ for the Eromanga Natural History Museum

22 Mar 2023

Aptly located on Dinosaur Drive, Eromanga, the Eromanga Natural History Museum is committed to discovering, conserving and showcasing the fossil, natural and cultural heritage of the upper Murray/Darling and Lake Eyre/Cooper basins.

The incredible diversity of Outback Australia’s natural history is on display—from the tiniest fossils the size of a sugar grain to the mightiest dinosaurs Australia has ever seen.

The Eromanga Natural History Museum not only provides an exciting and educational visitor experience, but it’s also a fabulous advocate for the South West Queensland region. Therefore, it’s no surprise the museum won bronze at the 2022 Queensland Tourism Awards in the Cultural Tourism category.

We caught up with them to see how they’re going and what’s on the horizon for 2023.

What progress or major milestone are you most proud of?

By far, the opening of the Eromanga Natural History Museum Stage 2A reception, shop, café, and theatrette has made the biggest impact. It’s enhanced our already exceptional visitor experience by providing an increased level of comfort and sophistication.

We are also proud of being home to Australia’s Largest Dinosaur, Australotitan cooperensis, or more commonly known as ‘Cooper’. Further to that, we’ve been able to bring economic and employment growth to the region, which we feel is a major milestone.

What kind of support has the department provided and how has it impacted your business?

We were so pleased to receive support from the department for the most recent development of the museum’s research and viewing galleries which was a $1.5 million project. We’re glad the museum is starting to raise it’s profile within industry, government and philanthropy.

What’s on the horizon for the Eromanga Natural History Museum in 2023?

There are a number of developments expected in the future (some of which are contingent on funding), including the development of a home for Australia’s largest dinosaur and a dedicated gallery with the goal of extending length of stay and expanding visitor experience. However, in 2023, we will also be opening two exciting new exhibitions and working on developing more corporate and industry partnerships to help build our regional visitor economy.

Any final words?

The Queensland Tourism Awards are a great measuring stick to judge how we as an organisation are tracking against other businesses in the industry.

We are so proud of being committed to discover, preserve and showcase the fossil and natural heritage of Outback Queensland and deliver economic, social and regional benefits for many.
