Education Experience Programs

Queensland’s amazing natural attractions offer a unique educational opportunity for students to immerse themselves in an authentic live classroom to learn more about the rich biodiversity, history and heritage of our State.

There’s nothing like first-hand experience to reinforce learning. Queensland’s education experience programs offer Queensland students the opportunity to visit either Outback Queensland, or the Great Barrier Reef.

The programs are aligned to the Australian school curriculum and resources for schools and teachers are available to support alignment with themes in the curriculum.

Outback Queensland Education Experience Program

The Outback Queensland Education Experience Program encourages teachers to take their students to Outback Queensland and integrate its rich history and heritage into school learning. It provides the opportunity for students to learn from and give back to Outback communities by experiencing life on the land.

A subsidy of up to $150 is provided, depending on the distance travelled from the school to the outback locations visited.

Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program

The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Education Experience Program was launched in March 2021 to support opportunities for students to undertake place-based learning activities in the GBR, and to provide opportunities for tourism operators in the region to enhance and develop educational products and experiences to stimulate new market travel and subsequent tourism visitation to the GBR region.

The GBR Education Experience Program will align with the school curriculum, and resources will be developed for schools and teachers to support alignment with the themes of the GBR within the Australian school curriculum.

The program will provide up to $150 per student for eligible students to go towards travel, accommodation and experience expenses on the reef excursion.

The subsidy is available upon application to all Queensland primary and secondary schools.

The program will be available for all primary and secondary schools in Queensland to undertake school excursions along the length of the Great Barrier Reef, from Cooktown to Bundaberg.

Reef tourism operators will be identified in each region for inclusion in the program which meet high standard tourism operator requirements, school safety requirements for group excursions and can offer an education experience aligned with the national curriculum.

There will also be flow-on benefits for accommodation providers and other tourism experiences in the region.
