The days of big ideas, big investment and big returns only happening in big cities is officially a dated notion, with companies such as Natural Evolution Foods leading the way in rural innovation.
Located in Walkamin in Far North Queensland, Natural Evolution Foods was founded by husband and wife team Robert and Krista Watkins on natural, nutritional, gluten free superfoods and bringing those foods to the world.
Natural Evolution Foods is a world-first company specialising in innovative uses for otherwise wasted green bananas, including gluten-free banana flour and a range of skincare products.
Back in the beginning everyone thought we’d gone bananas — quite literally!” Krista remembered.
“But people are so much more receptive now to our product. We know consumers want real food that is honest and sustainable and produced with love.”
The produce has become so popular that to meet the demand the world’s first and only pharmaceutical grade banana flour factory in 2014, taking their weekly output to around eight tonnes of banana flour every week.
A few short years later an Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas Fund grant allowed Natural Evolution Foods to scale-up and patent a manufacturing system that ensures consistently high-quality processing.
Following their success with banana flour the team is now trialling similar processes and creating new products with waste sweet potato, broccoli leaves and other produce that would normally be discarded.
